These published ranges come from other websites. We didn't set them, and they aren't a quote or an offer. We refer you to a local company, and that company names your final price.

Labor: HomeGuide says technicians charge $75 to $150 an hour. A simple fix like a drain flush or a fuse can take under an hour. HomeGuide says a repair takes as little as 1 hour or as many as 8, and an evaporator coil or compressor job is at the long end.

- The part. A capacitor is a small part. A compressor or an evaporator coil is a big one.
- Warranty. HomeGuide says costs are lower if the unit is still under warranty, because you may pay only for labor. For example, it lists a condenser fan motor at $100 to $300 under warranty and $200 to $700 without.
- The refrigerant. HomeGuide says a recharge runs $100 to $320 for newer R-410A systems and $180 to $600 for older R-22 systems. It also says AC units never need more refrigerant unless there's a leak, so ask where it went.
- Time of the visit. Ask about extra charges for nights and weekends. We didn't find a published number to quote.
Should I repair it or replace it?
HomeGuide lists these signs that replacing may make more sense than repairing: - The AC is more than 10 years old. - It uses R-22 refrigerant (the older kind). - It needs repairs often. - The repair bill is half or more of what a new unit would cost. - The repair cost, times the age of the system in years, is more than $5,000.
Here's how the last rule works. A 12-year-old AC with a $600 repair: 12 x $600 = $7,200. That's over $5,000, so HomeGuide's rule says think about replacing. A 6-year-old AC with the same repair: 6 x $600 = $3,600. Repair it. (The math is ours. The rule is HomeGuide's.)
HomeGuide's own price for a new central AC is $5,000 to $8,300. See what replacement costs in St. Petersburg for more price lists.
Does fixing an AC in St. Petersburg take a permit?
Often not for a simple fix, but ask. The city keeps a list of exempted permits. It says a mechanical permit may not be needed when you swap out one component part of an appliance and the swap doesn't change the appliance's original approval. The same list says the city can still ask for a permit in some cases. Taking out a whole central AC and putting in a new one is a different job. The replacement cost page covers that.

Call (727) 610-8633Does an AC repair company need a Florida license?
Under Florida's licensing rules (from the state's DBPR), you need a state contractor's license to put in a central air-conditioning unit for pay. Swapping a filter doesn't need one. The DBPR page leaves many repair jobs off its list. So ask for the company's license number, then check it at myfloridalicense.com before you sign.
Questions to ask before you say yes
- Is there a trip charge, and is it credited toward the repair if you go ahead?
- What exactly is broken, and can I see the part?
- Is the part under warranty?
- What's the labor warranty on the repair?
- Can you also price a new system, so I can compare?
- What's the license number?
FAQ
How much does AC repair cost in St. Petersburg?
No St. Pete price list turned up. National guides put most repairs at $150 to $650 (HomeGuide, August 2025) or $250 to $700 (Fixr, January 2026). Expect the first visit to start around $75. A compressor or coil job can run anywhere from $600 to $4,500.
How much is an AC service call?
HomeGuide puts a service call or diagnosis at $75 to $200. Fixr says most visits cost $75 or more. Ask if that fee gets credited when you hire them for the repair, and if the first hour of labor is included.
Is it worth repairing a 10 year old AC?
HomeGuide says to think about replacing if the AC is over 10 years old, uses R-22, needs frequent repairs, or if the repair costs half of a new unit or more. It also says to multiply repair cost by the unit's age. If that's over $5,000, think about replacing.
Does fixing an AC in St. Petersburg take a permit?
Often not for a simple fix. The city's exempt list says a mechanical permit may not be needed to swap one component part when it doesn't change the appliance's original approval. Replacing the whole central AC is different. Ask the city's Construction Services office about your job.
